Arnold Arboretum's autumn colors are an invitation to compare trees
The free living collection offers more than a seasonal backdrop when a visit slows down around leaves, bark and plant labels.

Autumn color can draw someone into the Arnold Arboretum, but it is only the beginning of what there is to notice. Two nearby trees may differ in bark, branching, leaf shape and the pace at which their foliage changes. Comparing them turns a seasonal walk into a closer look at a living collection.
The Arboretum describes a 281-acre landscape with more than fifteen thousand accessioned plants. Its interactive and printable maps help visitors choose a manageable area rather than trying to cover every collection in one visit. Plant labels provide a starting point for learning what is growing nearby.
The landscape is free and open daily from sunrise to sunset, with the visitor center normally open 10 a.m.–4 p.m. at 125 Arborway. Daylight gets shorter through autumn, so plan the route and return accordingly. Check current access information, especially if an entrance or particular path is important to the outing.
The accessibility guide lists designated parking at several gates and provides staff contact information for route planning. Individual paths have different demands, so choose with the group's needs in mind. Leave leaves, bark and other plant material undisturbed. A few photographs and notes about one tree can become a useful record to compare with the same place in another season.
